Will 2011 Be Your Year Of Success?

A new year full of hope and possibility. A clean slate. Will 2011 be your year?

It can be if you are willing to put in the right effort. Not just effort, but work focused in the right places and with the correct attitude.

1. Make a plan and then work that plan. Take some time right now at the beginning of the year to determine exactly what it is that you want to accomplish and the general steps needed to get you there. Then each week sit down and come up with concrete steps you need to take in that week to move forward on those goals.

2. Don’t get sidetracked by negativity. Change is hard, learning can be tough and growing a new business takes time. If you aren’t careful a negative attitude can creep in and eat away at your resolve and energy. There will be bumps on the road to success. Learn to deal with them instead of complaining or blaming others.

3. Celebrate your successes, both big and small. If the only thing that you view as success when it comes to your business is making money you are going to miss out on many opportunities to acknowledge your own growth. It may help each week to assess the previous week’s progress. Did you learn a new skill? Or maybe you expanded on knowledge you already possessed. Do you take a step that took you out of your comfort zone?   Keep track of these things, because they are truly the things that will lead to monetary success over time.

2011 can be the year that you see significant personal and business growth. Its all up to you!

Don’t Let a Sense of Entitlement Keep You from Being Successful

A false sense of entitlement can keep you from finding success in business and in life.

There are certain times when we are appropriately entitled. If I pay for a product, I am entitled to receive that product. If I meet certain appropriate criteria, I am entitled to the established return. If I uphold my side of a contract, I am entitled to the stated benefits that come from it.

Entitlements are conditional. And in order for someone to be rightfully entitled, the conditions need to be established and agreed upon (almost always in advance). The problem with having a false sense of entitlement comes when individuals assume certain rewards based on their own arbitrary criteria.

For instance, a recent college graduate – after barely limping his way through college – may feel entitled to a certain salary based on his degree even though he’s done nothing to show his worth. Or a company veteran may feel entitled to taking longer lunch breaks based on his seniority even though there was no established rule of that being the case.

This sense of entitlement is damaging to success. If we assume we are entitled to certain rewards or benefits, we will feel frustrated, bitter, or even apathetic toward future work when they don’t come.

This isn’t to say people and employees aren’t occasionally treated unfairly. Sometimes a lesser-deserving individual does get the promotion and sometimes hard work doesn’t result in the expected reward. Some companies don’t compensate their employees appropriately or don’t have a positive workplace culture that rewards the hardest work or the greatest talent.

The fact of the matter is that life is not fair and sometimes you will get the short end of the stick. Sometimes your hard work won’t be rewarded or even acknowledged. But in moments like that, it’s important to rise above any false sense of entitlement you may have (and, if appropriate, approach a supervisor or manager to discuss any concerns you may have) and don’t let it inhibit your success.

The Sum Of Success

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out. – Robert Collier

What you do each day, each hour, each minute- matters. Its that simple. You can choose to spend your time on the things that help you attain success, or you can choose to use your time in less productive pursuits.

How do you define success? What are the conditions you want to change in your life? What are the wonderful aspects of your life that you want to enhance?

Choose success.

Keep Them Coming Back For More

Marketing can be expensive. People are holding on to their purse strings tighter than ever and the effort it takes to pry their fingers from their cash isn’t free. When people are strapped for cash they tend to gravitate towards the familiar – the restaurant that serves reliably good food, the mechanic that they know and trust – all the things they’ve used before.

Customers that have used your products or services in the past are not only the most inexpensive to market to, but they are the most likely to buy. Find ways for your business to earn repeat customers with email newsletters, customer appreciation specials, or new products and you’ll have a source of income that your business can rely on.

Get Obsessed With Marketing

There is a lot that goes into building a business from the ground up. Licensing, branding, finding a niche, and working out logistics are all important aspects of business building that can take a lot of time. However, most business owners can attest to the fact that the first few years of any business is focused primarily on marketing. Without marketing, you don’t have customers, and without customers, you don’t have a business.

Once business owners build up a good customer base and learn how to keep them coming back, they can start dividing their attention more evenly between the various demands. It is essential for any aspiring entrepreneur to obtain a solid understanding of marketing techniques both online and off if they want to succeed.

See Yourself As a Winner

see yourself as a winner with PMI

“If you don’t see yourself as a winner, then you cannot perform as a winner.”
-Zig Ziglar

I used to play field hockey in high school and I remember one practice day before the first game of the season, our coach asked us to sit on the field and close our eyes. She then narrated us through a visualization of the game day: the people sitting in the stands, the uniforms and shouts of our opponents, the nerves, running the ball down the field, dodging other players, passing the ball, receiving the ball, and hitting it past the goalie and into the goal.

Unfortunately I didn’t really participate in this exercise. I spent the time looking around at my teammates and wondering when the coach was going to come to her senses. I thought we should have been practicing plays and taking shots on the goal, not dreaming about taking shots on the goal.

Game day came and, needless to say, I didn’t score a goal. I had practiced dribbling, passing, and dodging, but I couldn’t make it happen the way I wanted. I couldn’t even imagine what it would be like to win and I didn’t really think I could do it, so obviously, I didn’t.

Dreams are pointless without actions, but the best way to prepare and motivate yourself for success is by imagining it and thinking of yourself as a winner. If you see yourself as a winner you will act like a winner and when the time comes to finally sign that contract or make that move, you will know what to do.

Do What You Are Afraid to Do

pmi do what you are afraid to do“It was a high counsel that I once heard given to a young person, “Always do what you are afraid to do.”"
Ralph Waldo Emerson

It is usually the things we want most that scare us most. It is also usually the difficult things that are most worth doing. If you can teach yourself to face fears and view difficulties as challenges to conquer, you will be unstoppable. If you want to set yourself up for a life of success, challenge yourself to conquer your fears of failure and disappointment. You will be surprised by what you can do.

Learning From Others

There are certain advantages to making your own mistakes and gaining your own experiences. There are few brain-etching experiences more powerful than figuring out your own problems.

However, there are also some distinct advantages to using the insight and advice from those that have come before you, then applying them in your own life. The success of others doesn’t just help you set up a road map for your own success, but their stories and triumphs can be a great motivator as you move forward in your own endeavors.

So don’t be afraid of trying something new and learning from it, but you should also take advantage of the resources that are already out there.
